Teaching Assistant - 1:1 SEN Support

The Role:

We are looking for a compassionate and experienced 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team full-time, starting in September. The successful candidate will work closely with a specific pupil, promoting their learning and personal development to help them make the most of their educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualised Support: Motivate and encourage the pupil, providing individual attention, reassurance, and help with learning tasks as needed.
  • Targeted Assistance: Assist in areas such as speech and language, social communication, and interaction.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Use praise, commentary, and assistance to keep the pupil focused and on task.
  • Collaboration: Liaise with the class teacher, SENCO, and other professionals to plan and deliver tailored support.
  • Behaviour Management: Implement agreed behaviour management strategies consistently and effectively.
  • Resource Creation: Help create appropriate resources to support the pupil's learning.
  • Relationship Building: Establish supportive relationships with the pupil, their parents, and outside agencies.
  • Inclusion Promotion: Encourage the pupil's interaction with peers in a positive and acceptable manner.
  • Activity Adaptation: Modify or adapt learning activities as needed to achieve intended outcomes.
  • Social Skill Development: Support the pupil in developing social skills both inside and outside the classroom.
  • ICT Support: Assist with the use of ICT in learning activities and specific programs.
  • Feedback: Provide regular feedback on the pupil's learning and behaviour to the teacher, SENCO, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Observation: Carry out and report on systematic observations of the pupil to inform teaching judgements.
  • Group Dynamics: Support the pupil in group situations to promote group effectiveness.
  • Policy Adherence: Apply school policies on Child Protection, Health and Safety, Behaviour, Teaching and Learning, and Equal Opportunities.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school information.
  • Progress Reviews: Contribute to reviews of the pupil's progress.
  • Training Participation: Engage in training activities to enhance skills in working with children with specific learning difficulties.
  • Routine Support: Assist with daily routines, including lunch supervision.
  • Educational Visits: Accompany the pupil and teacher on educational visits.
  • After School Support: Provide individual support during after-school clubs as needed.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, particularly in supporting children with SEN.
  • Strong understanding of strategies to support pupils with speech and language needs and social communication challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to promoting inclusion and ensuring every pupil reaches their full potential.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the needs of the pupil and the school.
  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the update service or be willing to undertake a new one.

Desirable:

  • Training in specific SEN support techniques.
  • Experience with positive handling techniques.
  • Familiarity with the use of ICT to support learning.
