To lead a team of Environmental Team Assistants providing a quality customer focused recycling and waste service that provides value for money and meets the needs of all our customers across the borough. 

To ensure the safe collection of scheduled recycling and waste collections on a daily basis.

To continuously reduce collection complaints / problems, improve service delivery quality and maximize St Helens recycling performance. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. To promote flexible and team based working and to work flexibly across the service to ensure that all daily recycling and waste collections and tasks are completed on the scheduled day.  
  2. To work flexibly as part of the Recycling and Waste team in all areas and on all waste streams, vehicles or crews as directed by a Supervisor as part of group / depot based team working – whereby all teams work together until the daily collections / work tasks have been completed.  This means that teams working on recycling collections work together as one team to complete all recycling collection tasks; the same applies to teams working on refuse collection and garden waste collections.
  3. To work flexibly, including longer hours as and when required, where vehicle breakdowns, traffic congestion / accidents, delays at waste transfer stations or Bank Holidays make it necessary to do so in order to complete service delivery on the specified day.
  4. To be trained to drive a range of vehicles (up to and including 32 tonnes (LGV) which could also include tractors, tippers, HIAB crane, tail lift, platform, pick-ups and transit vans) in order to provide assistance in other areas of the Departments operations in emergency situations and/or when climatic conditions demand a change in service priorities and/or when service need dictates a change in priorities.
  1. To undertake an environmental stewardship role and report any issue within the street scene environment (graffiti, fly tipping, potholes etc.) to a supervisor. *See Note 3 at the rear of the document for further information.
  2. To communicate by mobile phone / in-cab technology or in written form at the request of Recycling & Waste team.
  3. To telephone the Recycling and Waste office in good time for further instruction, before end of duty if the possibility of being unable to collect scheduled days’ work arises.
  4. To operate all in-cab communications equipment and in-cab technology, including appropriate vehicle management information system.
  5. Help to resolve and minimize complaints (including missed collections and contaminated bins) through face-to-face contact with customers and by providing pre-written information (such as leaflets, calling cards, non-collection stickers, etc.).   

About You:

  • Experience with driving all types of vehicles including HGV.

  • Experience of collecting all forms of waste collections

  • Experience of drivers hours and regulations

  • Category C (Class 2) Driving Licence

  • Current Driver Qualification Card (CPC)

  • Able to undertake annual performance appraisals of Environmental Team Assistants, following appropriate training.   

  • Able to work with minimal supervision.

Hours & Pay 

£14.41

Monday - Friday 6:15am - 2:45pm
