Job Title:  General Manager

Reports to:  Head of Operations

Location:  Manchester 

Role Summary:  Manage the operational, financial and compliance duties of the depot.  Plan and develop systems and procedures to improve the operating quality and efficiency of the depot.  Lead staff to fulfil their roles in accordance with company policies and procedures.  Responsible for training and coaching employees within the depot.  Responsible for the ownership and upkeep of the Manchester O’License.  Responsible for improving and maintaining the profitability of the depot through business development and building on existing client relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities 

This is a list of the main duties of the role and should not be considered an exhaustive list of duties. 

Managing the collection and delivery operations following company’s policies and procedures ensuring KPIs are achieved.

Managing expenditure, P&L and producing report and business forecast.

In co-operation with the HOO and other senior managers across the group, promote the interest and profile and develop the overall profitability growth of our Client.

Achieving, managing & promoting FORS standard. 

Ensure contingency plans are developed, documented and communicated.

To oversee the operation, compliance and management of the ATF operation.

Ensure general housekeeping is carried out at all times and that the reporting and communication is delivered to clients within agreed SLAs, or in the absence of an SLA, a reasonable time to be set by the MD.

Further enhance communication practices at all levels.

Assist in the development of current procedures and work practices to improve efficiency.

Responsible for Document control for all Manchester local Processes and Risk Assessments

Guide Operations Manager to ensure: All staff are fully utilised to meet the operational service needs. All staff are deployed by the most cost-effective means and reduce overtime. All staff are provided and allocated to each specific area to complete required tasks within set out timelines.  Operation is pro-actively managed with resources well planned. Pro-active management of ISPs, agency staff, owner drivers and sub-contractors People management processes are carried out effectively.

Ensure high levels of Health & Safety conditions at all times within the warehouse environment, adhering to the relevant legislation.

Ensure Security conditions and legislation is followed closely by operational staff.

Ensure senior management are informed of events, progress and activities on a regular basis.

To visit customers as required to understand full requirements, agree and implement any procedural changes or corrective actions. 

To assist Senior Management in building and maintaining a high level of customer service.

In the future a set of KPI’s and reports will be introduced and you will be expected to fill in these reports and your performance will be measured against the KPI’s. Download, monitor and action Driver / Vehicle tachographs.

Download, monitor and action Driver / Vehicle tachographs & infringements.

Control Maintenance & testing schedule for vehicles, FLTs & equipment.

Control of Driver Recruitment, Discipline, Training, Development and Equipment.

Ordering & control of all role related Purchasing, POs & cost control including Agency, Truck / WH equipment, uniforms, training, testing.

Monitor compliance for CAA regulations / FORS standard / ISO9001 etc.

Monitor / Record / Investigate Accidents and Near Misses.

Control and report on Direct costs and to compile data in area of responsibility.

Provide instruction, training and mentorship to Operational staff within remit.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Depot Manager in the Logistics sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of Logistics and Freight forwarding function.
  • In-depth knowledge of budgets, costs and KPIs (commercial awareness).
  • Sound knowledge of Aviation Security.
  • Proven experience as a company O’License holder.
  • Ability to handle pressure in unforeseen circumstances.
  • Demonstrable leadership quality with hands-on experience. 
  • Flexibility in working hours.
  • Customer focused.
  • Excellent people management skills.
  • Good influencing skills.
  • Procedurally proficient.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Organised with good planning skills.
  • Strength of character with the ability to make tough commercial and operational decisions.
  • Recruitment experience.
  • Up-to-date National Managers Certificate of Professional Competence for Road Haulage.
