Highways Operative

Location: Nantwich, CW5 6BJ

Full Time: 40 hours per week

We are working alongside a market leader in the highways industry to recruit a Highways Operative.

The main purpose of the role is to assist, generally as part of a team, in delivering highway maintenance and construction works.

Essex Highways is responsible for managing and maintaining one of the largest highway networks in the country: 5,000 miles of roads and around 5,000 miles of footways. Essex Highways is a delivery partnership between Essex County Council and our contractual partner.

The Role

  • Work as part of the highway maintenance operational team.
  • Carry out a variety of skilled tasks including carriageway, footway, drainage maintenance, soft estate maintenance works (e.g. grass cutting, strimming etc) and minor civils works.
  • Ensure that all works are completed safely.
  • Receive daily briefings and understand risks and control measures required for the task.
  • Complete daily record sheets and associated documents
  • Ensure that works are completed to the required standard and within required timescales
  • Report safety concerns
  • Ensure waste is dealt with in the appropriate manner
  • Participate in out-of-hours winter maintenance and emergency response activities on a rota basis.

About You

  • Highway’s maintenance experience.
  • A current, valid driving licence is essential .
  • Able to carry out basic safety, quality and environmental audits and risk assessments.
  • Able to take responsibility for traffic management, 12 A/B Traffic Management.
  • Demonstrable awareness of environmental aspects and impacts and waste management.
  • Understands and behaves safely, encourages others to behave safely and helps develop new safety processes.
  • Ability to deal effectively with peers, client representatives and the general public.
  • Demands and delivers high standards, has a passion for customer service that challenges poor service delivery.
  • Take personal responsibility for work produced, makes decisions and provides detailed solutions when escalating decisions upwards.
  • Able to give clear instruction, provide mentoring for apprentices and trainees as required.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with customers both internally and externally.
